The Guitar is a Transposing Instrument

A little know fact, even among guitar players, is that the guitar is a transposing instrument. Just like when a tenor saxaphone players sees music written in concert pitch they know that the notes for their instrument comes out a whole step lower. A tenor sax is written a major second higher than sounded.

Music for the Guitar is written one octave higher then sounded.

For the guitar the transposition is one octave and is of little concern for beginning guitar students.

Music for the Ukulele is written as sounded.

Visualizing the Ukulele Fingerboard

If you know the notes of the open position on the guitar them fret (7) on the uke can be though of as the open strings or fret (12) of a guitar.
